Ligustrum fruit contains oleanolic acid and secoiridoid glycosides such as specnuezhenide, with reported immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic, lipid-lowering, and antioxidant effects in line with its traditional liver-kidney yin tonifying use.

脾胃虚寒泄泻及阳虚者忌服。性凉滑利，便溏腹泻者慎用，恐滑肠致泻加重。
本品性凉而润滑，脾胃虚寒、便溏腹泻者忌用，可加重泄泻。临床多与旱莲草配伍组成二至丸，相须为用，补益力胜而不滋腻。生品有缓和通便之效，故便秘阴虚者用生品，便溏者宜酒制或慎用。
女贞实，味苦，平。主补中，安五脏，养精神，除百疾。久服肥健，轻身不老。
