Chinese gall contains abundant gallotannins (>60%) and gallic acid, with astringent, hemostatic, antibacterial, anti-ulcer and antiviral effects.
敛肺降火、涩肠止泻、固精止遗、敛汗止血，为主要收涩药。

酸涩收敛之力较强，外感咳嗽、湿热泻痢、积滞未清者忌服。内服剂量不宜过大，以免引起恶心呕吐。
含大量鞣酸（约60–70%），不宜与铁剂、生物碱、蛋白类药物同服。大剂量内服可刺激胃肠，引起恶心呕吐及肝肾损害，应严格控制剂量。
五倍子，咸酸，平，无毒。敛肺降火，化痰饮，止咳嗽，消渴盗汗，呕吐失血久痢，黄病心腹痛，小儿夜啼，治眼赤湿烂，消肿毒喉痹，敛溃疮金疮，收脱肛子肠坠下。
