Tongue inspection stands at the head of the four diagnostic methods. The color, shape, and moisture of the tongue body together with the thickness, color, and distribution of the coating externalize the state of qi, blood, heat, cold, vacuity, and repletion within the organs. This atlas presents schematic hand-drawn diagrams grouped by tongue-body color — each entry carries its clinical significance and the patterns it accompanies. These are teaching schematics, not pathology photographs; their purpose is to highlight what to look for.
舌色较正常浅淡，甚则全无血色，苔薄白而润，舌体大小尚可。
舌色淡白，舌面水滑欲滴，苔白而润泽过度，甚则积水。
舌质淡白，舌面光洁少苔或完全无苔，干燥乏津。
舌体胖大，伸出满口，舌色淡白，舌边可见明显齿痕，苔薄白而润。
舌苔灰黑而润滑多津，苔质腻或水滑，舌体多淡胖。
舌体瘦小薄弱，舌色淡白，苔少而干，舌面少津。
舌色鲜红，舌面光洁如镜，毫无苔质，干燥少津。
舌色较正常红，舌面覆薄黄苔，苔薄而均匀。
舌色偏红，舌苔剥落不全，形成地图样花斑，剥处光红无苔。
舌色红，苔黄厚而干，甚则焦黄起芒刺，触之燥涩无津。
舌色偏红，舌面覆黄色厚腻苔，苔质油腻紧贴，或黄中带灰。
舌色红，舌面可见纵横深浅不一之裂纹，如刀割状，少苔或无苔。
舌体瘦薄，舌色红绛，舌面少苔或无苔，干燥乏津。
