The dried root and rhizome of Cynanchum atratum or C. versicolor (Asclepiadaceae). Cold, bitter and salty, entering the Stomach, Liver, and Kidney channels. Clears vacuity heat, cools the blood, and promotes urination. Effective for yin-vacuity fever and postpartum vacuity fever, as well as urinary tract heat conditions.
