本品辛香走窜，开泄力强，气血阴阳虚衰而无邪闭者禁用；孕妇禁用。久服耗气伤阴。寒闭神昏须配伍温开药使用，不宜单用。
本品辛香走窜，为强力开窍药，孕妇禁用。气血亏虚而无邪闭实证者忌用，以免耗气伤正。剂量极微，超量可致恶心呕吐、头晕、过敏。不入煎剂，因受热挥发升华即失效。心肌梗死急救常用含冰片之苏合香丸、安宫牛黄丸。
龙脑香及膏香，味辛苦，微寒，无毒。主心腹邪气，风湿积聚，耳聋。明目，去目赤肤翳。
