The cast-off exoskeleton of the nymph of Cryptotympana pustulata (Cicadidae). Enters the Lung and Liver channels. Sweet and cool, light and buoyant, it disperses Lung-channel wind-heat to benefit the throat and restore the voice, vents rashes and stops itching, and enters the Liver channel to brighten the eyes, clear visual obstructions, and extinguish wind to stop spasms. An important pediatric medicinal.

Cicadae Periostracum consists mainly of chitin with minor proteins and amino acids; decoctions show sedative, antipyretic, anticonvulsant, and antiallergic activity in animal studies.

Bensky notes that Chan Tui is commonly paired with jing jie and fang feng for wind-rashes, and with jiang can for pediatric convulsions.
