The dried root of Dichroa febrifuga (Saxifragaceae). Enters the Lung, Heart, and Liver channels. Bitter, pungent, cold, and toxic. Induces vomiting of phlegm and interrupts malaria — a classical antimalarial herb now largely superseded by artemisinin. Toxic; modern use is limited.

有毒。常山含常山碱等生物碱,致吐作用强烈,过量可引起剧烈恶心呕吐、腹泻、腹痛。大量中毒可致脱水、电解质紊乱甚至休克。孕妇禁用(有致畸报告)。内服应严格控制剂量,酒炒可减轻致吐副作用。
味苦,寒。主伤寒寒热,热发温疟,鬼毒,胸中痰结吐逆。

Chang shan contains quinazoline alkaloids (dichroine/febrifugine) with potent antimalarial activity (kills Plasmodium), but strong emetic side effects limit clinical use. The derivative halofuginone has entered modern drug development.
