The dried aerial part or root of Cirsium japonicum (Asteraceae). Enters the Heart and Liver channels. Sweet, bitter, and cool, it is similar to Xiaoji but with stronger hemostatic action, especially for hematemesis and flooding/spotting.

大蓟含蓟黄素、刺槐素苷等黄酮类,具止血、降压、抗菌作用,止血力较小蓟更强。
Japanese thistle contains cirsimarin and pectolinarin with hemostatic, hypotensive, and antibacterial effects; its hemostatic potency exceeds that of Xiaoji.
大蓟止血力强于小蓟,二者常相须配伍,称大小蓟。
Bensky notes Daji has stronger hemostatic action than Xiaoji; the two are often paired and called Da-Xiao Ji.
