The dried root of Codonopsis pilosula, C. pilosula var. modesta, or C. tangshen (Campanulaceae). Enters the Spleen and Lung channels. Sweet and neutral, it is a mild tonic for the Spleen and Lung, widely substituted for ren shen in classical formulas where the condition does not involve collapse or severe yang depletion. Modern clinical practice extensively employs it as a gentler alternative to ginseng.
