The dried root of Stephania tetrandra (Menispermaceae). Enters the Bladder and Lung channels. Bitter, pungent, and cold, it dispels wind-dampness and alleviates pain while promoting urination and reducing edema. Particularly suitable for wind-damp-heat impediment with red, swollen, hot, painful joints and for wind-water or skin-water edema. Han fang ji and mu fang ji must be distinguished, and Aristolochia fangchi must be absolutely avoided due to nephrotoxicity.
祛风湿,利水消肿
宜用粉防己(汉防己,Stephania tetrandra),利水消肿力胜;木防己(青风藤类)偏于祛风通络止痛。
