The dried germinated caryopsis of Setaria italica (foxtail millet) or, per modern pharmacopoeia, Oryza sativa (Poaceae). Enters the Spleen and Stomach channels. Sweet and neutral, Gu Ya disperses starch-based food stagnation, harmonizes the stomach, fortifies the Spleen, and opens the appetite. Milder than Mai Ya, it is favored in pediatric and postpartum digestive weakness; the stir-fried form (Chao Gu Ya) strengthens the food-dispersing action.
