The dried leaf of Nelumbo nucifera (Nelumbonaceae). Enters the Liver, Spleen, and Stomach channels. Bitter, astringent, and neutral, He Ye clears summerheat, transforms dampness, upbears and effuses the clear yang of the Spleen, and — when charred (He Ye Tan) — cools and stanches bleeding. It is classically used for summerheat vexation with thirst, summerheat-damp diarrhea, and blood-heat hemorrhage, and is a core ingredient of Qing Luo Yin for summerheat patterns.
