The dried ripe seed of Raphanus sativus (Brassicaceae). Enters the Spleen, Stomach, and Lung channels. Pungent, sweet, and neutral, it is the key herb for digesting food stagnation, relieving distention, directing qi downward, and transforming phlegm. Featured in Bao He Wan and San Zi Yang Qin Tang, where it is combined with zi su zi and bai jie zi for elderly patients with phlegm-dyspnea.
长于涌吐风痰,多用于痰涎壅盛、喉痹、食积气滞之重证
药性缓和,长于消食除胀、降气化痰,多用于食积气滞、痰喘咳嗽
消食除胀常用5–12g;降气化痰定喘可用至15g。生用长于涌吐风痰,炒用长于消食下气化痰,入汤剂宜打碎。

气虚无食积、痰滞者慎用。不宜与人参同用,恐减人参补气之力(相恶)。脾胃虚弱而无积滞者忌服。

《本草纲目》载:莱菔子之功,长于利气。生能升,熟能降。升则吐风痰、散风寒、发疮疹;降则定痰喘咳嗽、调下痢后重、止内痛。

Raphanus seed enhances GI motility and is antitussive/expectorant; raphanin inhibits Gram-positive bacteria and fungi.

《中国药典》以芥子碱硫氰酸盐含量(不少于 0.40%)为质量指标。
