Lian zi contains bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids (in embryo), starch, and protein; the seed flesh tonifies Spleen and Kidney, while the embryo (lian zi xin) has hypotensive and sedative effects.
《中国药典》收载莲子与莲子心,分别规定质量标准。
Chinese Pharmacopoeia lists both lian zi and lian zi xin with separate quality standards.
