The dried root and rhizome of Ephedra sinica or E. intermedia (Ephedraceae). Enters the Lung channel. Sweet, astringent, and neutral, it exclusively reaches the muscle layer to secure the interstices and check sweating, making it the key herb for spontaneous sweating and night sweats. It provides the most celebrated example of 'one plant, two uses with opposite effects' in Chinese materia medica: the stem (ma huang) promotes sweating, while the root stops it. Commonly combined with mu li, huang qi, and fu xiao mai in Mu Li San.
Reference range for non-pregnant adults. Not a personalized prescription. Pregnancy, lactation, and pediatric use require specialist supervision.
Protective guidance only — when to avoid or use with caution. This block deliberately omits pregnancy, lactation, and pediatric dosing: any such use must be managed by a qualified TCM practitioner or appropriate specialist.

Ephedra root contains macrocyclic spermine alkaloids (ephedradines A–D, maokonine), tannins and flavonoids; pharmacology shows hypotensive, antihidrotic (sweat-suppressing) and astringent effects — pharmacologically distinct from the sympathomimetic ephedrine of the stem.
Bensky explicitly distinguishes Ma Huang stem (diaphoretic) from Ma Huang Gen root (antihidrotic), emphasizing they are not interchangeable, and lists Mu Li San as the classical sweat-arresting formula.
Chen & Chen
Chen & Chen cite pharmacology studies showing ephedradines have hypotensive activity — opposite to the pressor effect of stem ephedrine.
Chinese Pharmacopoeia lists Ma Huang Gen and Ma Huang as separate monographs with distinct sources, characteristics and indications; prescriptions must strictly distinguish them.
