The dried nearly ripe fruit of Chaenomeles speciosa (Rosaceae). Enters the Liver and Spleen channels. Sour and warm, its sour flavor enters the Liver, where it excels at relaxing sinews and unblocking network vessels. It is the key herb for wind-damp impediment pain, sinew-vessel contracture, and leg qi with cramping. It must be strictly distinguished from the edible papaya (Carica papaya) of the Caricaceae family.
