The dried ripe fruit of Ligustrum lucidum (Oleaceae). Enters the Liver and Kidney channels. Sweet, bitter, and cool; a commonly used herb to enrich Liver-Kidney yin, clear vacuity heat, brighten the eyes, and darken the hair. Listed as a superior-grade herb in the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing under the name 'nü zhen shi.' Frequently paired with Mo Han Lian (Eclipta) in the famous Er Zhi Wan, a classic yin-tonic formula.

煎服6–12g。生用清热力胜,酒制补肝肾力强。

脾胃虚寒泄泻及阳虚者忌服。性凉滑利,便溏腹泻者慎用,恐滑肠致泻加重。
本品性凉而润滑,脾胃虚寒、便溏腹泻者忌用,可加重泄泻。临床多与旱莲草配伍组成二至丸,相须为用,补益力胜而不滋腻。生品有缓和通便之效,故便秘阴虚者用生品,便溏者宜酒制或慎用。
女贞实,味苦,平。主补中,安五脏,养精神,除百疾。久服肥健,轻身不老。
