The dried root and rhizome of Sophora tonkinensis (Fabaceae). Cold and bitter, toxic, entering the Lung and Stomach channels. Excels at clearing heat-toxin and reducing throat swelling; a key herb for severe sore throat. Contains matrine and is somewhat toxic; dosage must be kept small.
