The dried secretion from the musk gland of the male forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii), alpine musk deer (M. sifanicus), or Siberian musk deer (M. moschiferus). Enters the Heart and Spleen channels. Pungent, warm, and intensely aromatic, it is the supreme orifice-opening herb that courses through all twelve channels. Key ingredient in An Gong Niu Huang Wan, Zhi Bao Dan, and Su He Xiang Wan. Absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy. NOTE: Musk deer are CITES-protected endangered species; synthetic musk (artificial musk) is the recommended clinical substitute.

味辛温。主辟恶气，杀鬼精物，温疟，蛊毒，痫痓。去三虫。久服除邪，不梦寤魘寐。

麝香主含大环酮类（麝香酮），具有兴奋中枢神经、抗炎、强心及促进微循环等作用。人工麝香以合成麝香酮为主要成分。
Musk contains the macrocyclic ketone muscone, with CNS-stimulating, anti-inflammatory, cardiotonic, and microcirculation-promoting activities. Synthetic musk uses manufactured muscone as its principal constituent.
《中国药典》收载天然麝香和人工麝香两个品种。人工麝香已通过多项临床验证。
Chinese Pharmacopoeia lists both natural musk and artificial musk. Synthetic musk has passed multiple clinical validations.
