Insect galls formed on leaves of Rhus chinensis, R. potaninii, and related species (Anacardiaceae) by parasitic aphids of the genus Schlechtendalia. Enters the Lung, Large Intestine, and Kidney channels. Sour, astringent, and cold, it astringes the Lung and directs fire downward, binds the intestines and secures essence, stops sweating and bleeding. Suitable for both internal administration and external application, it is a key astringent-securing herb.

酸涩收敛之力较强,外感咳嗽、湿热泻痢、积滞未清者忌服。内服剂量不宜过大,以免引起恶心呕吐。
含大量鞣酸(约60–70%),不宜与铁剂、生物碱、蛋白类药物同服。大剂量内服可刺激胃肠,引起恶心呕吐及肝肾损害,应严格控制剂量。
五倍子,咸酸,平,无毒。敛肺降火,化痰饮,止咳嗽,消渴盗汗,呕吐失血久痢,黄病心腹痛,小儿夜啼,治眼赤湿烂,消肿毒喉痹,敛溃疮金疮,收脱肛子肠坠下。
