The dried root of Panax quinquefolius (Araliaceae), originally from North America and introduced to China during the Qing Qianlong era. Enters the Heart, Lung, and Kidney channels. Sweet, slightly bitter, and cool, it supplements qi while nourishing yin. In contrast to ren shen (warm in nature), xi yang shen provides cool supplementation without warm dryness, making it appropriate for vacuity patterns with fire exuberance and yin damage. First recorded in Ben Cao Cong Xin (Wu Yiluo, 1757).
