The dried root of Scrophularia ningpoensis (Scrophulariaceae). Enters the Lung, Stomach, and Kidney channels. Sweet, bitter, salty, and cold, its dark color enters the Kidney, and its salty quality softens hardness. It excels at treating Kidney-yin insufficiency with vacuity fire flaring upward, causing sore throat and scrofula. Wu Jutong's Zeng Ye Tang pairs it with mai dong and sheng di to treat fluid exhaustion and constipation in warm disease.
