The dried ripe fruit of Brucea javanica (Simaroubaceae). Cold and bitter, slightly toxic, entering the Large Intestine and Liver channels. Clears heat-toxin, intercepts malaria, and stops dysentery. Taken orally wrapped in longan flesh; must not be chewed. Applied externally to cauterize warts. Dosage must be strictly controlled due to toxicity.

Ya Dan Zi contains bruceolide-type quassinoids with antimalarial, antiamoebic, and antineoplastic activity; the raw seed is toxic so oil emulsions are preferred clinically.

Bitter-cold with toxicity; clears heat, resolves toxin, arrests dysentery and malaria; topically used for corns and warts.
