The dried aerial part of Leonurus japonicus (Lamiaceae). Enters the Liver, Pericardium, and Bladder channels. Bitter, pungent, and cool, it is the essential gynecological herb for menstrual and postpartum disorders, hence its name 'benefit-the-mother herb.' It invigorates blood and dispels stasis to regulate menstruation and also promotes urination to reduce edema, treating stasis and water simultaneously.

煎服常用9–30g；鲜品可用至12–40g；外用适量捣敷或煎汤外洗。大剂量(30–60g)可用于顽固性水肿。

Leonurus contains leonurine and stachydrine, producing uterotonic, microcirculation-improving, diuretic and cardioprotective effects that underlie its blood-invigorating, menstruation-regulating and edema-reducing actions.
《中国药典》以盐酸水苏碱为含量测定指标，益母草注射液用于产后出血。
The Chinese Pharmacopoeia uses stachydrine hydrochloride as an assay marker; Yi Mu Cao injection is used for postpartum hemorrhage.
