A thirty-five-year-old woman, frequently childbearing and overworked. Her menses have dribbled continuously for three months, pale and thin, accompanied by palpitations and fluster, poor sleep with many dreams, sallow complexion, reduced appetite with reluctance to speak, and limb weariness. Tongue pale with thin coat; pulse thin and weak.
Dual deficiency of heart and spleen; qi fails to contain blood and spleen fails to govern blood — a flooding-and-spotting case.
The master said: 'Sweet-warm herbs should nourish heart and spleen, containing blood back to its channels.' Gui Pi Tang with added E Jiao and charred Pao Jiang was given for ten doses; spotting gradually stopped. Twenty more doses settled the palpitations and sleep, restored qi and blood, and regularised the menses.
Ye Tianshi treats flooding not by simply stanching blood, but by addressing spleen-governs-blood and heart-rules-blood. Sweet-warm herbs nourish heart and spleen; once the spleen is robust blood returns to its channels of itself — the way of treating the root.
