Ejiao is gelatin prepared from donkey hide, rich in collagen-derived peptides, amino acids and trace minerals; pharmacology shows hematopoietic support, hemostatic, immunomodulatory and antianemic effects.
《中国药典》规定阿胶须以驴皮熬制，并以特征肽段 DNA/肽组学方法进行真伪鉴别。

为补血止血要药，常与当归、熟地配伍；脾胃虚弱者宜配健脾药以防滋腻。
Key blood-tonifying and hemostatic herb; often paired with danggui and shudi; combine with spleen-supporting herbs if digestion is weak.
性黏腻，脾胃虚弱、呕吐泄泻者慎用。
Cloying nature; use cautiously in weak digestion, vomiting or diarrhea.

阿胶滋腻碍胃，脾胃虚弱、纳差便溏、湿浊中阻、痰湿内盛者忌用或慎用。外感初起者亦不宜单用。
阿胶性质滋腻，长期或大量服用易碍脾胃运化，宜配伍陈皮、砂仁等行气化湿之品。脾虚湿盛者非宜。
味甘，平。主心腹内崩，劳极洒洒如疟状，腰腹痛，四肢酸疼，女子下血，安胎。久服轻身益气。
