The Shang Han Lun formula for greater yang wind-cold exterior repletion complicated by interior constraint heat. Composed of ma huang, gui zhi, xing ren, shi gao, sheng jiang, da zao, and zhi gan cao, its diaphoretic force is drastic and it simultaneously clears interior heat. Strictly contraindicated unless exterior repletion without sweating is accompanied by vexation and agitation.
Induce sweating to release the exterior; concurrently clear interior heat
Formula Rhyme
大青龙汤桂麻黄,杏草石膏姜枣藏。太阳无汗兼烦躁,散寒清热此方良。
—— 方剂学教材 (traditional mnemonic)
Da Qing Long Tang has Gui Zhi and Ma Huang; Xing Ren, Gan Cao, Shi Gao, Sheng Jiang and Da Zao are stored within — for taiyang disease without sweat with vexation, this formula is fine for both dissipating cold and clearing heat.
