A solid gelatin prepared by decocting the dried hide of Equus asinus (Equidae). Enters the Lung, Liver, and Kidney channels. Sweet and neutral, it is the essential herb for tonifying blood, nourishing yin, moistening dryness, and stopping bleeding. A key gynecological medicinal for regulating menstruation and calming the fetus, it belongs alongside shu di huang, dang gui, and bai shao as one of the four principal blood-supplementing substances.
补血滋阴，润燥止血
矫其滋腻，便于入丸散；蛤粉炒长于润肺化痰，蒲黄炒长于止血
入汤剂宜烊化兑服；亦可入丸散膏剂。

阿胶滋腻碍胃，脾胃虚弱、纳差便溏、湿浊中阻、痰湿内盛者忌用或慎用。外感初起者亦不宜单用。
阿胶性质滋腻，长期或大量服用易碍脾胃运化，宜配伍陈皮、砂仁等行气化湿之品。脾虚湿盛者非宜。
味甘，平。主心腹内崩，劳极洒洒如疟状，腰腹痛，四肢酸疼，女子下血，安胎。久服轻身益气。

为补血止血要药，常与当归、熟地配伍；脾胃虚弱者宜配健脾药以防滋腻。
