The dried flower bud of Tussilago farfara (Asteraceae). Enters the Lung channel. Pungent, bitter, sweet, and warm, it moistens the Lung, directs qi downward, stops cough, and transforms phlegm. A key cough-stopping herb, especially suitable for wind-cold and vacuity-cold cough, it can be used for cough regardless of cold, heat, vacuity, or repletion with appropriate combinations. Classically paired with zi wan as in Zi Wan San and Bai Hua Gao.
