Aucklandia root is rich in sesquiterpene lactones (notably costunolide and dehydrocostus lactone) and volatile oils, with modern studies indicating prokinetic, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects consistent with its traditional qi-moving and pain-relieving use.
Bensky notes that Aucklandia volatile oil stimulates isolated intestinal smooth muscle at low concentration and inhibits it at high concentration, paralleling its bidirectional qi-regulating action.
Chen & Chen report that dehydrocostus lactone shows anti-inflammatory activity and inhibits several Gram-positive bacteria.
