The dried root of Gentiana macrophylla, G. straminea, G. crassicaulis, or G. dahurica (Gentianaceae). Enters the Stomach, Liver, and Gallbladder channels. Bitter, pungent, and neutral, it is the mildest and most balanced of the wind-dampness-dispelling herbs, called the 'moistening agent among wind medicinals.' It treats both heat and cold impediment patterns while also withdrawing vacuity heat and clearing damp-heat, making it especially suitable for chronic impediment with yin vacuity and heat.

Gentiana macrophylla contains iridoid alkaloids (gentianine) and gentiopicroside, with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, and (in animal studies) glucose-elevating effects that parallel its traditional wind-damp dispelling and vacuity-heat clearing use.
《中药学》(Bensky)指出秦艽为风药中之润剂,可用于热痹。
Bensky describes Qin Jiao as a moistening wind-medicine suitable even for hot bi (joint) patterns.
Chen & Chen 综述秦艽碱甲的抗炎镇痛作用,作用机制与肾上腺皮质激素样效应相关。
Chen & Chen summarize anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of gentianine, partly mediated via adrenocortical-like mechanisms.
