The dried rhizome of Cimicifuga heracleifolia, C. dahurica, or C. foetida (Ranunculaceae). Enters the Lung, Spleen, Stomach, and Large Intestine channels. Pungent, sweet, and cool, it releases the exterior and vents rashes, clears heat and resolves toxicity, and raises sunken yang qi. Its classical pairing with chai hu in Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang exemplifies the method of raising yang and upbearing the sinking.
