The dried rhizome of Acorus tatarinowii (Araceae). Enters the Heart and Stomach channels. Pungent, bitter, and warm, its aromatic and penetrating nature opens the Heart orifices, expels phlegm-turbidity for spirit clouding and epilepsy, and transforms dampness-turbidity to awaken the Spleen for dampness obstructing the middle burner. A key herb for opening orifices and calming the spirit, commonly paired with yuan zhi and fu ling in Kai Xin San and An Shen Ding Zhi Wan.
