The Shang Han Lun formula for cold-heat complex glomus (pi) of the middle burner with impaired Spleen-Stomach ascending and descending. Composed of ban xia, huang qin, huang lian, gan jiang, ren shen, da zao, and zhi gan cao, it employs acrid-opening and bitter-descending with concurrent cold and warm, supplementing and draining simultaneously. Ban Xia Xie Xin has Huang Lian and Huang Qin, plus Gan Jiang, Gan Cao and Ren Shen; Da Zao harmonizes it — it treats vacuity focal distention by descending yang and harmonizing yin.
