The dried caulis of Akebia quinata or A. trifoliata (Lardizabalaceae). Enters the Heart, Small Intestine, and Bladder channels. Bitter-cold and downward-draining, it clears Heart fire above and disinhibits urination below, especially for oral sores with dark urine from Heart fire transferring to the Small Intestine.

Akebia Mu Tong contains triterpene saponins and potassium salts with diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects; must be distinguished from Guan Mu Tong (Aristolochia manshuriensis) which contains nephrotoxic aristolochic acids and is banned.
木通苦寒,利尿通淋,清心火,通经下乳。必须使用五叶木通,禁用关木通。
Bitter-cold; promotes urination, clears heart fire, frees channels, and promotes lactation. Only five-leaf Akebia Mu Tong is to be used; Aristolochia Guan Mu Tong is banned due to aristolochic acid nephrotoxicity.
