The dried nearly ripe fruit of Evodia rutaecarpa, E. rutaecarpa var. officinalis, or E. rutaecarpa var. bodinieri (Rutaceae). Enters the Liver, Spleen, Stomach, and Kidney channels. Pungent, bitter, and hot, it is the key herb for jue yin headache and Liver-Stomach vacuity cold. Zhang Zhongjing's Wu Zhu Yu Tang is its representative formula, treating both vertex headache from jue yin cold and Stomach-cold vomiting.

Evodia fruit contains indoloquinazoline alkaloids (evodiamine, rutaecarpine) with analgesic, antiemetic, vasorelaxant and anti-ulcer effects.
散寒止痛、疏肝下气、助阳止泻,为吴茱萸汤君药;小毒,不宜过量久服。
Disperses cold, moves Liver qi downward, warms yang and stops diarrhea; sovereign herb of Wu Zhu Yu Tang; slightly toxic, should not be overdosed or used long-term.
高剂量或长期使用有肝毒性报告;吴茱萸碱可影响多种 CYP 酶和 P-糖蛋白。
