The dried middle layer of the stem of Bambusa tuldoides, Sinocalamus beecheyanus, or Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis (Poaceae). Enters the Lung, Stomach, Heart, and Gallbladder channels. Sweet and cool, it clears heat and transforms phlegm, eliminates vexation and stops vomiting, and cools blood and calms the fetus. It is a key herb for phlegm-heat cough, Stomach-heat vomiting, and Gallbladder constraint with phlegm disturbance, commonly paired with ban xia, chen pi, and zhi shi in Wen Dan Tang.

寒痰咳嗽及胃寒呕吐者不宜。脾胃虚寒者慎用。凡与乌头类药物配伍仍应参照十八反慎用含竹沥之剂。
性偏凉,不耐寒凉者及脾胃虚寒证不宜使用。鲜品与陈久者效力有异,临床宜辨。
