The dried leaf or leafy twig of Perilla frutescens (Lamiaceae). Enters the Lung and Spleen channels. Pungent and warm, it releases the exterior and disperses cold while simultaneously moving qi and harmonizing the stomach, making it the key herb for wind-cold exterior patterns complicated by qi stagnation and chest oppression, as in Xiang Su San and Shen Su Yin.

煎服5–9g,不宜久煎,宜后下;外用适量,煎水洗

Perilla leaf volatile oil is dominated by perillaldehyde, with rosmarinic acid and luteolin providing antipyretic, antiallergic, antimicrobial, antispasmodic and antiemetic/fetus-calming activities.
