A patient in early spring contracted wind-warmth. Presenting with mild fever and slight aversion to wind, head distension and sore throat, mild thirst, cough with scant sticky phlegm, red tongue tip and edges with a thin white coating tinged yellow, and a pulse that is floating and rapid.
Wind-warmth assailing the Lung, with failure of defensive-level diffusion. Early-stage warm disease lodged in the Upper Burner Hand-Taiyin.
After administering Yin Qiao San as a light acrid-cool dose, Lu Gen was added to generate fluids and arrest cough. After two doses the fever resolved and the body cooled; cough diminished markedly; one further dose effected recovery.
Warm pathogens are received from above and first assail the Lung. Ye's method uses light acrid-cool formulas to disperse wind and vent heat, strictly avoiding acrid-warm diaphoretics that would aid the heat and injure fluids. This embodies 'at the defensive level, sweating is permissible' — not by forced diaphoresis but by gentle dispersing and venting.
