银翘散

Yín Qiào Sǎn

Honeysuckle and Forsythia Powder

Wu Jutong's acrid-cool balanced formula from the upper-burner chapter of Wen Bing Tiao Bian, the representative formula for warm disease at the initial defensive (wei) level. With jin yin hua and lian qiao as chief herbs, it uses a light, clearing, and venting method to release exterior pathogens and clear interior heat-toxin for fever, slight aversion to wind-cold, sore throat, and a floating rapid pulse.

Formula Rhyme

银翘散主上焦疴，竹叶荆牛豉薄荷。甘桔芦根凉解法，清疏风热煮无过。

Yin Qiao San governs upper-burner ailments — with Zhu Ye, Jing Jie, Niu Bang Zi, Dou Chi and Bo He; Gan Cao, Jie Geng and Lu Gen give a cooling release; clear and disperse wind-heat without over-decocting.
