The dried stem and leaf of Lophatherum gracile (Poaceae). Enters the Heart, Stomach, and Small Intestine channels. Sweet, bland, and cold, it clears Heart and Stomach heat above to eliminate vexation and relieve thirst, and drains Small Intestine dampness below to guide heat downward through the urine. It must be distinguished from zhu ru (the inner bamboo stem layer) and true bamboo leaves (zhu ye). Featured in Wu Jutong's Yin Qiao San and San Ren Tang.

【辨识要点】本品为禾本科淡竹叶属多年生草本 Lophatherum gracile 的干燥茎叶,与真正的竹类(禾本科竹亚科)植物来源不同,不可与竹叶(鲜竹叶,Phyllostachys spp. 叶)或竹茹(zhu_ru,竹类茎秆中间层)混淆。现代药典明确区分三者。
淡竹叶,处处原野有之,春生苗,高数寸,细茎绿叶,俨如竹米落地所生,其根一窠十数须,须上结子。味甘、淡,性寒,能清心火,利小便。

淡竹叶主含C-糖苷黄酮(牡荆素、荭草素)、三萜类及钾盐,药理示其利尿、解热与抗氧化作用,临床用于热病烦渴及热淋涩痛。
Lophatherum contains C-glycosyl flavonoids (vitexin, orientin), triterpenoids and potassium salts; pharmacology shows diuretic, antipyretic and antioxidant effects, clinically used for febrile vexation-thirst and heat-lin dysuria.
《中国药典》规定淡竹叶来源为禾本科淡竹叶 Lophatherum gracile 的干燥茎叶,与竹类植物区别。
Chinese Pharmacopoeia specifies Dan Zhu Ye as Lophatherum gracile (Poaceae), distinct from true bamboo species.
Bensky 将淡竹叶列入清热泻火药,强调与竹叶(Phyllostachys)及竹茹来源不同,不可混淆。
