The dried rhizome and root of Notopterygium incisum or N. franchetii (Apiaceae). Enters the Bladder and Kidney channels. Pungent, bitter, and warm, its qi and flavor are vigorous and powerful, with particular affinity for the foot greater yang Bladder channel. It excels at dispersing wind-cold-dampness and relieving joint pain, making it the key herb for wind-cold-damp impediment of the upper body and greater yang headache.
解表散寒,祛风胜湿止痛
内服煎汤3–10g。用量过大易致呕吐,脾胃虚弱者不宜服。

阴血亏虚之头痛、身痛及血虚痹痛者忌用;辛温香燥,用量过多易耗气伤阴,脾胃虚弱者亦须慎用。
气味雄烈,用量过大易致呕吐。血虚痹痛、阴虚头痛者忌用。
羌活气雄而散,味薄上升,入足太阳膀胱经,以其为拨乱反正之主,故大寒大热之病非此不除也。
