脾胃之气既伤,而元气亦不能充,而诸病之所由生也。
今译脾胃之气一旦受损,元气就无法充盈,于是各种疾病便由此而产生。
Once the qi of the Spleen and Stomach is damaged, the original qi cannot be replenished — and from this all diseases arise.
元气之充足,皆由脾胃之气无所伤,而后能滋养元气。若胃气之本弱,饮食自倍,则脾胃之气既伤,而元气亦不能充,而诸病之所由生也。
今译元气之所以能够充足,全在于脾胃之气未受伤损,而后才能滋养元气。如果胃气本来就虚弱,饮食反而加倍,那么脾胃之气便受到损伤,元气也无法得到充养,各种疾病就从此而生。
The fullness of the original qi depends entirely upon the qi of the Spleen and Stomach remaining unharmed, for only then can it nourish the original qi. If the stomach qi is already weak and yet food and drink are doubled, then the qi of the Spleen and Stomach becomes damaged, the original qi cannot be replenished, and from this all manner of disease arises.
饮食不节则胃病,胃病则气短精神少而生大热,有时而显火上行,独燎其面。形体劳役则脾病,脾病则怠惰嗜卧,四肢不收,大便泄泻。
今译饮食没有节制就会损伤胃,胃一旦受病,便气短精神不振而生大热,有时虚火上炎,独独灼烧面部。形体过度劳累就会损伤脾,脾一旦受病,便倦怠嗜卧,四肢无力,大便溏泄。
Irregular diet damages the Stomach; once the Stomach is diseased, the breath becomes short, the spirit feeble, and great heat arises — at times a deficient fire rises upward and scorches the face alone. Excessive physical labor damages the Spleen; once the Spleen is diseased, the patient becomes languid and drowsy, the four limbs grow slack, and the stools turn loose.
脾胃一伤,五乱互作,其始病遍身壮热,头痛而渴,脉洪大而头痛,或渴不止,其皮肤不任风寒而生寒热。盖阴火上冲,则气高而喘,身烦热,为头痛,为渴而脉洪。黄芪劳役病热甚者一钱,甘草炙,以上各五分,人参去芦三分,有嗽去之,当归身酒焙干或日干以和血脉,橘皮以导气,升麻、柴胡以引黄芪、甘草甘温之气味上升,能补胃气之散解,白术除胃中热,利腰脐间血。
今译脾胃一旦受伤,五脏气机便错乱互作。初病见全身壮热、头痛烦渴、脉洪大,或渴饮不止,皮肤畏风寒而寒热交作。这是阴火上冲,所以气逆喘促、身热烦躁、头痛口渴、脉象洪大。治以黄芪(劳役病热甚者一钱)、炙甘草各五分、去芦人参三分(有嗽者去之)、当归(酒焙或日干)以和血脉,橘皮以导气机,升麻、柴胡引黄芪甘草甘温之气味上升,能补脾胃散解之气,白术除胃中虚热、利腰脐之血。
Once the Spleen and Stomach are damaged, the qi of the five viscera falls into disorder. At the onset one sees vigorous fever throughout the body, headache with thirst, a surging pulse, ceaseless thirst, and skin unable to bear wind-cold so that chills and fever come and go. This is yin fire surging upward — hence the high labored breath, hot vexation, headache, thirst, and surging pulse. Treat with Huang Qi (one qian if heat from overwork is severe), honey-fried Gan Cao five fen, Ren Shen (rhizome removed) three fen (omit if there is cough), Dang Gui (wine-baked or sun-dried) to harmonize the blood vessels, Chen Pi to guide the qi, Sheng Ma and Chai Hu to lift upward the sweet-warm flavor of Huang Qi and Gan Cao and so replenish the scattered qi of the Stomach, and Bai Zhu to clear heat from the middle and free the blood of the waist and umbilicus.
火郁则发之。升发脾胃之阳气,使其调达,则郁热自散。治男子妇人四肢发困热,肌热,筋痹热,骨髓中热,发困,热如燎,扪之烙手,此病多因血虚而得之,或胃虚过食冷物,抑遏阳气于脾土之中。
今译火郁于内,应当发散之。升发脾胃的阳气,使气机调达通畅,郁热便自然消散。此方治疗男女四肢困倦发热、肌肉热、筋痹热、骨髓中热,困倦而热如焚烧,按之烫手。此病多因血虚所致,或因胃虚而过食寒凉,使阳气被抑郁于脾土之中。
When fire is depressed, it should be vented. Lift the yang qi of the Spleen and Stomach so that its movement becomes free, and the depressed heat will disperse of itself. This formula treats both men and women with weary heat in the four limbs, heat in the flesh, sinew-heat, marrow-heat — exhaustion with burning heat that scorches the hand upon touch. The disease most often arises from blood deficiency, or from a weak Stomach overloaded with cold foods so that the yang qi becomes pent up within the Spleen earth.
