The dried root and rhizome of Asarum heterotropoides var. mandshuricum, A. sieboldii, or A. sieboldii var. seoulense (Aristolochiaceae). Enters the Lung, Kidney, and Heart channels. Pungent and warm, this highly mobile and penetrating herb disperses wind-cold in the head and face, warms the Lung to transform thin mucus, and searches out wind-dampness from sinews and bones.

Asarum herb contains volatile phenylpropanoids (methyl eugenol, safrole) and lignans, with analgesic, antipyretic, local anesthetic and anti-inflammatory effects; potentially toxic.
Since 2005, the Chinese Pharmacopoeia has restricted official Xi Xin to root and rhizome (not whole plant) to reduce aristolochic acid exposure, with a limit of aristolochic acid I not exceeding 0.001%.
Safrole is hepatotoxic and potentially carcinogenic; aristolochic acid is definitively nephrotoxic and carcinogenic—dose and duration must be strictly controlled.
