Cough is the upward rebellion of Lung qi producing sound and expectoration. It is divided into external contraction and internal injury types. External cough results from pathogenic invasion of the Lung; internal cough results from organ dysfunction affecting the Lung.
Key differentiation: Wind-cold cough has thin white sputum with chills; wind-heat has thick yellow sputum with sore throat; dryness shows dry cough with little sputum; phlegm-damp has copious white sticky sputum; yin vacuity shows dry cough with scanty sputum and dry mouth.
