Insomnia is characterized by the persistent inability to obtain normal sleep, manifesting as difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking, inability to return to sleep, or intermittent sleep. The core pathomechanism is yang repletion with yin vacuity, preventing yang from entering yin.
Key differentiation: Heart-Spleen vacuity shows excessive dreaming with easy waking and palpitations; yin vacuity fire has vexation with hot palms and soles; Liver fire has irritability with red eyes; phlegm-heat has chest oppression with nausea and bitter taste.
