The dried root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa (Ranunculaceae). Enters the Heart, Liver, and Kidney channels. Bitter, pungent, and cool, it excels at both clearing repletion heat in the constructive-blood level and withdrawing vacuity heat from the yin level, including bone-steaming fever without sweating. It is the primary herb for clearing vacuity heat in Liu Wei Di Huang Wan.
